Verse 24: Bitter Kindness

Introduction

This verse doesn’t mince words, making it a rather bitter pill. But it comes from a kind place with a sincere intention to serve our lives, just like potent medicine.

Being so direct is difficult. We usually soften what we say, if we say it at all, out of respect, kindness, fear of conflict, etc. But really, who are we serving by not just saying what needs to be heard?

Notice I said “saying what needs to be heard” and not “saying what needs to be said.” Throughout Weaving the Way, we are reminded to use our words sparingly and in service to others. This is a stark departure from the modern idea that our voice’s primary function is self-expression.

Translation

Gloating is not authority.
Self-promotion is not approval.
Showing off is not shining.
Pride is not success.
Arrogance is not memorable.

In the Dao, all of this is called:
“Wasted food, extra drama.”

It annoys everyone but the person doing it.
Even those who do not Weave the Way find it unbearable.

Commentary

I mean … ‘nuff said. Eh?
